JANUS REVIEW 2025 – Sheds Light on Industry Challenges

ABSTRACT

The Janus Review (2025) highlights that technological shortcomings and broader sector barriers are slowing the adoption and broader deployment of unmanned surface vehicles (USVs). While interest in autonomous maritime operations continues to grow across defence, research and commercial sectors, the review finds that persistent gaps in core technologies — including autonomy, sensor integration, and standards for interoperability — are delaying progress toward fully autonomous systems. Additional challenges identified include industry reluctance to share intellectual property, a shortage of specialized talent, and low production volumes that keep costs high and innovation slow. The findings underscore that overcoming these hurdles will require greater collaboration across manufacturers, developers, and end users, as well as investment in open architectures and scalable solutions.
