ABSTRACT
The 2025 Janus Review highlights the current state and future trajectory of the Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) sector, revealing both its transformative potential and the significant challenges it faces. Published annually by Janus Marine and Defense, the report finds that technological gaps, particularly in autonomy, AI, interoperability, and sensor systems, are constraining broader adoption and full autonomy. A lack of industry standards and reluctance to share intellectual property impede collaboration, while talent shortages and niche market demand create a persistent “Low Demand, Low Volume problem.” These factors keep costs high, slow innovation, and make scaling difficult for new entrants. The review underscores the need for open architectures, shared platforms, and continued research to accelerate growth across defense, research, and commercial maritime operations.
